What is Graphic Recording?

Graphic recording captures a discussion or conversation in a visual way. It’s ideal for any organisation where conversations take place - particularly strategy discussions, conferences and team awaydays. I specialise in drawing simple images in real-time, to help explain concepts and ideas in a straightforward, easy to understand way. The resulting large scale drawing is a powerful visual reminder of your content - a fantastic ‘aide memoire’ and a great, shareable tool for ongoing engagement with your audience and collaborators.

How does it work?

I come to your venue and draw visual notes to summarise what’s discussed during your meeting, workshop, conference or event. Usually, this will be using marker pens on a large sheet of paper which is temporarily attached to a wall, or where flat wall space is tricky, on a portable drawing board. In some cases, a series of smaller drawings may be preferable, or a live digital drawing output - there are lots of options and I’d be happy to discuss these with you.

The benefits to you

1. Visual thinking rocks! It’s widely accepted that our brains process visuals considerably faster than text. I capture a summary of your content in a mix of images, diagrams, quotes and text, giving the audience a unique visual perspective of the day. It’s usually big, bold and full of colour - an eye-catching and original way to get people’s attention.

2. Keeping it simple I use a mix of simple imagery and text to help explain concepts which are often complicated, technical or sector-specific. In this way, I aim for maximum clarity so that the content will be accessible and easy to understand for the audience at the event and afterwards.

3. An engaged audience In seeing the discussions visualised and their input captured through the graphic recording process, participants are freed up from taking notes themselves and can be more engaged in the conversation as it happens. Despite their simplicity, the visuals will often help to explain concepts more clearly and this enables discussions, particularly in a workshop setting, to go into greater depth.

4. Unique, shareable content During your event, participants can watch and interact with the graphic recording process, take photos and (where appropriate) share content live via their social networks, to widen the discussions beyond the confines of the venue. If you have a hashtag, website address or social media accounts, I can incorporate them into the drawing to encourage people to interact. After the event, you will have the original artwork on paper plus a digital version if required, so that you can share the completed graphic recording - for example with your stakeholders, on your office wall, on social media, in a report or on a website.
